Who are you…really? You hear about having a success mindset a lot. According to Dictionary.com the definition of mindset is
1. an attitude, disposition, or mood.
2. an intention or inclination.
So what about identity? There’s a few definitions the one I find interesting is the condition of being oneself or itself, and not another.
So what is creating your identity? What is molding who you are right now?
The Past-What We Remember (or are reminded of)
We all remember events from our past, our first love, our first car, our first job, that time when you were 10 years old and slipped on the ice and fell on your face in front of your friends. Ah…memories. We all have memories but memories by themselves don’t have any power unless we give them that power.
We also have friends and family that just can’t help bringing up things from our past. “Remember that time you got drunk and smashed your car?” Never mind that it happened 10 or 15 years ago. “Remember that time you screwed up that meeting at work?” We look back at some of the not so smart things we’ve done and think “I was young and stupid” or “I was unprepared”.
The problem begins when you apply those memories to the present. I’ve always been shy, I never know what to say to people, I wasn’t too smart in school, I’ve always had trouble finishing projects, I’ve always been disorganized and so on. Sometimes you don’t even realize what you’re saying isn’t even true anymore. What matters is the present. The past can be important if we can learn the lesson and move on.
The Present-And Now We Continue with Your Programming
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. How many times have you heard that in your lifetime? It’s always said with an air of hopelessness, there’s nothing you can do to change that. Apparently the rich get richer because they get all the breaks and have all the luck. The poor get poorer because they don’t.
Your programming starts at home as soon as you can understand what’s going on around you. It continues with your peers, other family, friends, coworkers, the media. How are you going to change anything? You’re not special or unique or smart enough. You’re not strong enough or confident enough, you’ll fail miserably, good luck with that blah, blah, blah. If your circle of influence has a negative mindset they want to keep you close to them. They don’t want you to succeed.
The Success Mindset Creating Your Identity-Present and Future
Who do you want to be today-Be that person
Who do you want to be tomorrow-Be that person
Who do you want to be a year from now, 5 years from now? You can be that person.
Be happy, be outgoing, be an example for others, be fulfilled, be rich, be organized, travel around the world, be a beacon in the lives of others be whatever you want to be. Be Success.
Listen to what you say about yourself to others and what you say when you’re alone. Then ask yourself is what you’re saying keeping you where you are or helping you get to where you want to be.
PS.
I’ve always been shy…I mean I’m the life of the party. How about you?
